Cross Keys backs NHF campaign on supported housing

July 13, 2010

Peterborough’s biggest landlord is joining a range of agencies throughout the East of England to mark Supported Housing month throughout July.

The National Housing Federation campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the crucial services running throughout the East of England that help vulnerable people enjoy independent and fulfilled lives.

Cross Keys Homes has 29 sheltered housing schemes across Peterborough which house more than 1,400 people and provide independent living with the added security of help on-hand in the event of an emergency. There are normally activities, outings and entertainment on offer organised by the residents themselves to help develop a real community spirit in the schemes.

Cross Keys Homes’ director of operations, Claire Higgins, said: “Sheltered housing gives residents a feeling of belonging to a community where they can feel safe and secure. People have their own front door but know that help is close at hand as well if they need it.

“No one should have to feel isolated or alone in today’s society and this is why we are backing the National Housing Federation’s campaign by promoting the many real benefits of sheltered housing.

“As well as being made to feel welcome and supported at the schemes, residents often find rewarding friendships and new hobbies. Many have reported finding a new lease of life when they take the decision to move into our schemes and that life has once more become fun for them.”

Resident Gordon Low (71), of Hinchcliffe 2 sheltered scheme in Orton Goldhay, said: “I have come here to live not to die.

“I have been living here for over five and a half years now and thoroughly enjoy it. I have so many friends and have a great social life which keeps me very busy.”

There are always a number of Cross Keys Homes’ sheltered housing properties available to rent around the city. For further information on Cross Keys Homes’ sheltered housing schemes, call: 01733 385103 or visit: www.crosskeyshomes.co.uk
